BETONG: Politeknik METRO Betong Sarawak (PMBS) and the Sarawak Tourist Guide Association (SKTGA) conducted a four-day specialised training to strengthen local participation in tourism.

Held from Sept 25 to 28, the short course titled ‘Interpretation of Our Stories: The Ethics and Roles of a Tourist Guide’ brought together 24 participants comprising homestay operators and aspiring guides.

PMBS in a statement said the training was aimed at equipping locals with professional knowledge and practical skills in tourist guiding, focusing on three areas, namely ethics and responsibilities, tour management, and effective commentary delivery.

PMBS director Shirley Phillip said the programme emphasised efforts to empower local communities to lead the growth of Sarawak’s tourism sector.

“This programme signifies a committed effort to build local capacity, ensuring that tourism growth is driven by knowledgeable and professional members of our own communities,” she said.

One of the participants, Akal Homestay owner, Abg Kiprawi Abg Abdul Latip from Pusa, said the course served as a vital platform for networking and knowledge sharing.

“For those newly venturing into the homestay business, this course is a conduit for gaining crucial information,” he said.

SKTGA deputy chairman Frankie Kho Chie Kian welcomed the collaboration, noting its importance in raising awareness of the guiding profession.

“This collaboration not only attracts the interest of the local community but also promotes tourist guiding as a profession.

“These communication skills are also transferable across service sectors where customer interaction is essential,” he said.
